CareerMatters: Police Officer

As you will read, there are three levels of employers for police officers ? federal (RCMP), provincial, and municipal. (links to each are provided in the above websites) Each of these (including each municipality) hires their own officers. In other words you would have to send in a separate application for each police force. The first requirement in all cases is that you are a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada. Secondly, employers look for a relevant post-secondary educational background. (ie. criminology, law enforcement or social sciences). Thirdly, you must pass a fitness test to demonstrate you are able to do the physical aspects of the job. If you have been trained in the UK, you should have your education and training assessed for their equivalency in Canadian terms before you apply. The following websites outline this process and provide links to organizations that can do this for you:

Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials: Information on Foreign Credential Evaluation

International Credential Assessment Service of Canada

Finally, in terms of the prospects for police officers in Canada, according to Job Futures Canada, the outlook is rated as ?Good?, due to a high level of retirement of current officers, leading to many job openings.
