Please be advised that in addition to assisting you in determining eligibility for the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP), the Department will be collecting this information for input into a tool for Canada Student Loan Program (CSLP) analysts for current and future reference.

The information you provide on this form is collected under the authority of the Department of Human Resources and Skills Development Act to administer the Canada Student Loan program. Completion is voluntary. The information you provide may be used to for policy analysis, research and/or be shared with other federal government institutions. It may also be shared with the provincial/territorial student loan program with which you are registered.

Your personal information is administered in accordance with the Human Resources and Skills Development Act and the Privacy Act. You have the right to the protection of, and access to, your personal information. It will be retained in Personal Information Bank (number HRSDC PPU 030). Your province of residence would have been the province or territory where you had most recently lived for at least 12 consecutive months prior to applying for a student loan. Why is this asked for?

Different provinces and territories have different repayment assistance programs. You are asked to enter this information so that the tool generates the most accurate repayment assistance information possible.

Please note that Quebec, the North West Territories and Nunavut do not participate in the Federal system and therefore are not eligible for Federal repayment assistance programs. Why is this asked for?

Your spouse or common-law partner's status affects the amount of the affordable payment available specifically for your loans. The affordable payment is based on your family income which would be used by you and your spouse. The student loan balance of a spouse or common-law partner will affect the Affordable Payment you may be required to make and may have an impact when determining your eligibility for the Repayment Assistance Plan. The assessment for repayment assistance for Borrowers with a Permanent Disability will take into consideration medical expenses related to the borrower's permanent disability, including housing or special care expenses that would be deducted from the applicant's income. Medically, acceptable expenses would generally mirror most Health Insurance Plans. Applicants with health insurance would also be able to include as an applicable expense any uninsured portion that a borrower would be required to pay out of pocket. Why is this asked for?

The total outstanding federal and provincial and territorial loan remaining is used to determine how much you would need to pay monthly in order to have your loan paid off within a specific period of time. This is called the Required Payment and is compared to the amount that is considered affordable based on your gross family income.

If you do not know the federal loan amount because your loan is from an integrated province (Ontario, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland/Labrador or New Brunswick) then you can estimate the Federal portion of your loan total by entering 2/3rds of your total loan (e.g. multiply your total loan amount by 0.66).

For those provinces that do not participate in CSLP, please consult your provincial or territorial student loan office to learn about their repayment assistance programs.

Interest Rate

Please enter the interest rate as indicated on your loan consolidation papers or on your latest loan statement.

If you have not signed your loan consolidation papers yet, your loan will automatically be consolidated 6-months after your study period has ended. You will then be sent your consolidation papers which will summarize the total amount you owe, the amortization period and the interest rate. Interest rates will either be floating (prime rate + 2.5%) or fixed (prime rate at the time of consolidation + 5%). For the purpose of this estimator you can also simply input the current prime rate (+ 2.5% for floating and +5% for fixed rates) from the Bank of Canada Web site.
